No Men's Land - A project by cym
Eine technische Beschreibung
cym arbeitet seit 1996 als Webdesignerin. Seit der Gestaltung ihrer ersten Website
hat sie die technologischen Entwicklungen im Bereich Webdesign sehr nah verfolgt.
Trotzdem entschließt sie sich bei vielen ihrer Arbeiten nur den HTML 3.2
Standard zu verwenden. Auch in ihrem Projekt "Niemandsland" verwendet
sie nur eine minimale Vielfalt an HTML-Befehlen, mit der zusätzlichen Benützung
von CSS Style-Sheets. Ein wichtiger Grund um bei den alten Standards zu bleiben,
ist eine Zugänglichkeit ohne zusätzliche Plug-Ins und für möglichst
viele verschiedene Platformen und Systeme zu schaffen.
In ihrem Projekt "Niemandsland" macht cym ein Foto von einer realen
Situation und verwandelt dieses Bild anschließend in eine abstrakte Komposition.
Dieses abstrakte Bild wird ausschließlich mit Hilfe von HTML, die Sprache
um Websites zu gestalten, gestaltet. Jede Komposition ist eine HTML-Tabelle mit
640x480 pixels, mit nur einem kleinen Transparenten Bild um die Größe
der unterschiedlichen Zellen zu fixieren. Dieses abstrakte Bild ist daher technisch
gesehen kein Bild mehr, sondern nur noch einige Zeilen HTML-Code. Texte im Originalfoto
werden gestaltet mit Hilfe von CSS Style-Sheets. Jede Komposition wird mit der
Hand gemacht. Die abstrakte Bilder werden nicht mit Hilfe eines speziellen Filters
in einem Bildbearbeitungsprogramm gestaltet. Die abstrakte Bilder sind auch keine
exakte Kopien von ihren Originalfotos, sondern neue Kompositionen von cym basierend
auf den Fotos aus der Realität.
Während dem Gestalten des abstrakten Bildes entscheidet cym welche Elemente
auf dem Originalfoto in der abstrakten Komposition betont und welche verschwinden
werden. Jedes Bild kann als individuelle Komposition, fast wie ein Gemälde,
ausschießlich aus HTML-Befehlen aufgebaut, gesehen werden. Die eingeschränkte
Verwendung von Farben und die beschränkten Möglichkeiten der HTML-Tabelle,
geben jeder Komposition ihre eigenen Atmosphäre oder Rhythmus. Die unterschiedliche
Kompositionen sind mittels einer Website miteinander verbunden und formen eine
Rekonstruktion von cym's Reisen ins Niemandsland.
Das Projekt "Niemandsland" kann mit jedem aktuellen Browser auf jeder
Plattform, ohne zusätzliches Plugin, angesehen werden. Bevorzugte (minimale)
Bildschirmauflösung ist 1024x768 Pixels mit (minimal) tausenden Farben.

The easiest way to navigate through the 'No Men's Land' project is from the starting map. Red dots on the abstract map show the real life locations where the original photos where taken. Clicking on one of the spots shows you the abstract composition made from the photo taken at this location. To see the the original photo on which the composition is based, click 'view source'.
One of the ideas behind the 'No Men's Land' project was that it should be possible to view the website also offline, for example in galleries, running the site from a cd or local drive. Therefor one of the restrictions in the construction of the page was not to use any server-side programming, like PHP. This makes it possible to run the website independent from a webserver. For the future a separate offline and online version were planned, the online version with a more interactive navigational map, but until now, also the online version is still hard-coded, plain HTML.
The project 'No Men's Land' is initially set up as a website, but there is also a presentation in video-format and in book-format. Technically the images are no longer HTML tables when presented as a video or printed in a book, however many people still feel more comfortable with browsing images inside a book than browsing images on a website. Since one of the ideas behind the 'No Men's Land' project is to make it accessible without the needs of any plugins or special programs, the book offers the possibility to view the project without the use of a computer at all...
